Curriculum

I have the privilege to teach religion to the 7th graders.  We use the Christ-light topical studies to guide our Christian living discussions.   We also study hymnology once a week.  The students are taught confirmation class twice a week by our Pastors.

I teach math as well.  We use Saxon Math 6/5 to drive our instruction.  We also focus time in our math class to improve our computation skills.

Reading is my main class throughout the day.  I teach reading to grades 5, 6, 7, and 8.  In reading, the students read between six and eight novels during the year. We focus on building vocabulary and reinforcing many literary elements while exploring different genres of literature. The novels will be read and discussed using different methods such as whole group, small group, and literature circles. This gives the students an opportunity to practice working together, while improving their comprehension and applying different reading strategies. Our discussions are always guided by God's Word.  We also study many literature concepts throughout the year. These concepts are taught in mini lessons and reinforced throughout our novels. Each day we learn a new word of the day. We explore the word, usage, meaning, as well as synonyms and antonyms of that word.

I also teach art.  Each class (4th grade - 8th grade) has art once a week.  During this time, the students study the elements of art. Throughout the year, the students go in-depth with each element and create projects for each element, using different art mediums. The students also study art history. Each grade level will have a specific period of art that will be studied, artists from this period, as well as contemporary artists. Projects will be created using the era and/or the artists as a model. In addition to these concepts, the students will study art criticism and art appreciation, exploring the feelings and emotions art produces.

God's Word is integrated into all we do and drives our discussions and guides our decisions on a daily basis.  What a blessing to educate using God's Word to guide our daily lives.
